Our Role in the Creation of the BioDOSE Lidding & Sealing System

In 2007, suretech was approached by Norman Niven—the inventor of Biodose® and founder of Protomed Limited—to help complete what was already an extraordinary innovation in medication management.

Norman had created a fully integrated system that combined:

  • Software to control medication, dosage, and patient identification

  • Hardware in the form of trays and individual “pots” for tablets and medicines

  • Protective packaging for secure transport and storage

  • Specialised equipment to seal lids to the pots within the trays

But one critical component was missing: a functional, reliable lidding and sealing system.

That’s where suretech came in.

A Partnership
Built to Last

The suretech–Protomed relationship has been long-standing and highly productive. Over the years, we have supported the system through Protomed’s evolution into Quantum Pharmaceuticals, Clinigen, and most recently, MDS Healthcare.

Today, we remain immensely proud of our contribution to the Biodose® MDS. Every month, over 4,000,000 doses are safely sealed and administered to thousands of patients across the UK and Ireland using the system we helped bring to life.

Innovation Where It
Mattered Most

Drawing on our expertise, experience, and unique capabilities, we designed and developed a sealing solution unlike anything previously achieved. Our system needed to do two seemingly opposite things simultaneously—and it did:

  • Heat-seal to the tray with a destructive bond, ensuring tamper evidence and security

  • Peel cleanly from each polypropylene pot, with the familiar, smooth action of a yoghurt-style seal

We engineered a lid that delivered both. It was also:

  • Inkjet and gel-printer compatible

  • Precisely cut for accurate alignment

  • Printable with patient and dose-specific information

  • Easy to position and seal within seconds

  • Liquid-safe and exceptionally reliable

This breakthrough became the cornerstone of the Biodose® Measured Dosing System.
